Multiplication and Antibody Formation of Korean Hemorrhagic Fever Virus in Animal Reservoir Host Apodemus agraius

Abstract
Lee et a1. discovered the etiologic agent and animal reservoir host of Korean hemorrhagic fever (KHF) and perfected a serologic test for diagnosis of the disease.
Growth of Hantaan virus, etiologic agent of KHF, and antibody response to the virus in the natural reservoir host of KHF, Apodemus agrarius, was investigated by inoculating intramuscularly 1, 000 ID50 of vir as ¢¥(76/118 strain 8th Apodemus passage) into Apodemus mice.
Presence of Hantaan virus in various tissues.of Apodemus was examined at certain intervals after inoculation of the virus. Viremia was first demonstrable 7 days after inoculation of the virus and it persisted for a few days. Virus multiplication was demonstrated in lung tissues and parotid glands as well as in liver and kidneys. It was demonstrated that immune complex was coexisted with KHF virus in the lung tissues of Apodemus mice for a long p.-riod of time after infection.
The detection of fluorescent antibodies after inoculating the virus into Apodemus mice showed that antibodie3 began to appear after 2 weeks, reached a maximum titer at 3 weeks and then declined slo~vly thereafter.
